AI website builders: what they do well, and where they quietly cost you

AI builders are genuinely good at getting something live this week. They are less good at everything that happens in month six.

What an AI website builder is actually good at

If you need a presence online by Friday, an AI website builder will get you there. It will draft copy, pick a layout, fill in placeholder imagery and give you something coherent enough to send to a customer. For validating an idea or replacing a dead Facebook page, that is a real win and it costs almost nothing.

The speed comes from constraint. The tool is choosing from a fixed set of patterns, and that is precisely why it works so quickly.

Where the costs show up later

The bill for that speed usually arrives as page weight, generic structure and limited control over the things search engines and customers care about.

  • Performance ceilings — generated pages tend to ship far more JavaScript and unoptimised imagery than a hand-built page, which shows up directly in Core Web Vitals.
  • Structural sameness — if your site follows the same template as ten thousand others, there is nothing for a search engine to distinguish.
  • Content that says nothing — AI-drafted copy is fluent but rarely contains the specific detail (pricing signals, coverage areas, process, proof) that converts.
  • Migration friction — moving off the platform later often means rebuilding rather than exporting.

A reasonable middle path

Use AI for what it is genuinely good at: first drafts, alt text, structured data scaffolding, summarising research, generating variants to test. Keep human judgement for information architecture, performance budgets and the specific claims that make your business credible.

That is roughly how we work. AI accelerates the boring parts; the structure, speed and copy that carry commercial weight are deliberate decisions.

When to choose which

Choose a builder if you are testing an idea, have no budget yet, and the site is not your main sales channel. Choose a custom build when the website is expected to generate enquiries, when speed affects revenue, or when you need it to keep working as the business changes.
